Site visit and thoughts on the beauty of a derelict place
This is a quick little video that I took while exploring 30-34 Vittoria Street. Although the building is currently under renovation (which meant I was walking around an actual construction site) I found it fascinating!
Photographs just were not enough to capture the atmosphere of the whole building. It felt like walking by a sleeping giant; all the little squeaky sounds, followed by the echoes of our feet on the bare concrete floors, as well as the sound of our voices filling the empty rooms - these were all signs of life within the building. Yes, it is an empty space. Yes, it is under renovation. And yes, it is not exactly a place you can describe as beautiful. But when you look at a building through a designer's perspective, you will see potential. That building has been created for a purpose, and now it needs a new one - a different function, a fresh design, new people using it. And from that point of view, I could see the beauty of an empty, derelict space.
Visiting 30-34 Vittoria Street has been an inspiring experience. I saw brickwork, but also potential, I walked through empty rooms, and felt surprised, I explored something that is already there, but thinking about what it could be. To find out where this journey takes me (and the building itself), keep looking our for my weekly updates.
